ON Sunday, October 16, two Bere Alston Trekkers (BATs) travelled to Bishops Stortford in Hertfordshire to take place in the Stort 30 – a 30mile ultramarathon.
The Stort 30 is a very pretty out and back 30 miles (15miles each way) along the River Stort navigation channel.
The route is flat and mostly good underfoot with a mixture of graded gravel paths and riverside grassy trail with only the first half a mile on footpaths/tarmac and the last half mile on the way back. Emma and Dan Dooney completed the course in a time of 4 hours 56 minutes 21seconds.
‘Northern’ BAT Andy Cowden ran this year’s Bere Pen 10 dressed in full American Civil War uniform, including boots and carrying a musket. Through sponsorship, Andy raised a fantastic £521.45 which will be added to the other funds raised by the event and divided between deserving groups on the peninsula. Details of the 2017 event are to be announced shortly.
