EARLIER this month Tamar and Tavy Gig Club hosted their annual regatta at Weir Quay on the banks of the Tamar.

It was a lovely day, with clubs attending from Rame, Cotehele and Dart to compete on the river.

The event was well supported.

The racing began with the Brunel race, a six mile course from Weir Quay with boats rowing down to the Brunel Bridge and back. This was a handicapped race, won by Dart Gig Club in Smudger in 1 hour 01 minute 26 seconds, with Cotehele Gig Club hot on their heels in Teilu with a time of 1.01.39.

Conditions were good, despite an easterly wind, and the boats enjoyed some good racing.

This was followed by shorter sprint races, starting with the ladies’ veterans, won by Rame Gig Club in Penlee, a men’s vets’ race won by Dart Gig Club, and a supervets’ race won by Tamar and Tavy.

In the ladies’ Tamar and Tavy were narrowly beaten by Rame Gig Club but T and T had success in the men’s and juniors’ races.
