Castle Drogo on Dartmoor was built between 1911 and 1930 and is the last castle built in England. The architect was Lutyens and his client was the owner Julius Drewe of Home and Colonial Stores.

Now, some original items from the private collection of the Drewe family Castle Drogo estate are up for auction.

Dartmoor Auctions, based in Sticklepath, has been privileged to work closely with the family to help find new homes for a whole host of fabulous pieces. The auction house continues to set the pace with their private client service discovering and curating the most wonderful of lots. Their lead valuer, Diana Tigwell, was commissioned to quote for an appraisal and, once it had been established which would be the perfect items to auction, they were carefully delivered to the saleroom. It was here that Diana and the rest of the expert team discussed how the items could be shown off to their best effect, and decided to create three room sets.

In the ‘drawing room’ is a huge Knole-style sofa (it took four people to lift it into place) - the epitome of distressed grandeur, along with an array of armchairs, an antique hand woven Turkish prayer rug, and a beautiful chess table with an original Staunton chess set. The next room is the ‘potting shed’ which includes a magnificent potter’s bench as used by Christopher Drewe as well as a superb collection of gardenalia including an antique square cloche from Castle Drogo’s kitchen garden. Vintage pots, enamel ware, tools, and tables fill out the rest of the space, while the mini ‘bedroom’ features an elegant Edwardian chaise longue.

It truly is an extraordinary collection and perfect for those who would love to own a piece of history. Dartmoor Auctions is open for all to view this upcoming Friday October 31 prior to the live public auction on Saturday November 1. The viewing is from 10am to 4pm and the Saturday saleroom doors open at 9am for a 9:30am start.
