Tavistock residents and visitors are being invited to keep Christmas local this festive season by taking part in the town’s annual shopping campaign, ‘The True Spirit of Christmas’, now returning for its third year.

Launched by the Tavistock Business Improvement District (BID), the initiative encourages shoppers to rediscover the joy of in-person shopping and support local traders during the vital pre-Christmas period.

As the cost-of-living crisis continues to shape spending habits and online retail dominates the marketplace, Tavistock’s message is simple — the true spirit of Christmas isn’t found online, it’s right here on your doorstep.

Janna Sanders, Manager of Tavistock BID, said: “This campaign is about reminding people that where you shop really matters. The weeks leading up to Christmas are critical for our town’s traders, and it’s more important than ever that we support them. Tavistock offers a truly festive shopping experience — one filled with atmosphere, personal service and community spirit that can’t be found with a click of a button.”

She added: “Buying locally is also a sustainable choice. You can find almost everything you need for Christmas here in Tavistock, often at great value, and you’ll be helping to keep our high street thriving.”

How to Get Involved

From November 8th, shoppers can take part in the True Spirit of Christmas competition for the chance to win one of three fantastic prizes. To enter:

  1. Collect a True Spirit of Christmas card from any business in the town.
  2. Purchase 5 Christmas gifts worth over £5 each from 5 different local shops throughout November and/or December.
  3. Have your card validated with each purchase and hand it in once complete.

There is no limit to the number of entries. Cards completed in November will receive two entries into the first prize draw at the end of the month.

Janna continued: “In December, visit us to enjoy the full Tavistock experience – shopping under the Christmas lights, enjoying the window displays and trees at the Christmas Tree Festival, a stroll by the Canal to take in the winter colours, then stop for an early dinner or drinks with friends before heading home. Tavistock is both a locals’ town and a destination for visitors across the region. Our location on the edge of Dartmoor and our strong community of independent businesses make it the ideal place for festive shopping and a great day out. The True Spirit of Christmas campaign is a celebration of everything that makes Tavistock special.”
