Dementia Action Week is from May 18–24 2026
Talking openly about dementia helps break down stigma and build understanding. When people feel able to share their experiences and symptoms, it fosters a more supportive environment for those affected and their families. This openness can reduce feelings of isolation and misunderstanding, helping to create a more compassionate and informed community.
Tavistock Dementia Alliance and Tavistock Memory Café are able to offer a range of support and information, including social activities, Cognitive Stimulation therapy and Dementia Friends training. See below for contact details.
Early signs may include difficulty recalling familiar words or names, misplacing items, confusion, and disorientation. Some people may also notice changes in mood, behaviour, or how they perceive the world around them.
If you begin to notice subtle changes, it’s important to take action.
Start by having a conversation with the individual and consider arranging a GP appointment to seek a diagnosis. An early diagnosis can provide clarity, open the door to treatments and support services, and help individuals and families plan ahead with greater confidence and control. It also improves access to care and enables communities to better support those affected.

Supporting Independence Through Community Transport
For many people living with dementia, having access to reliable transport and a familiar face can make a huge difference to independence and wellbeing. At Okehampton District Community Transport Group (ODCTG), we support members by helping them get to hospital appointments, shopping trips, peer support groups and social activities.
We also offer reassurance to families through friendly telephone support and signposting. Our Ring and Ride driver Mark, who has been with us for nearly 28 years, knows many of the regular passengers well and notices when someone may need extra support. Community transport helps people stay safe, independent and connected in their community.
