A WEST Devon businessman recently became the only person ever to have caught three different species of shark over 1,000lbs when he caught a Tiger Shark off the coast of Queensland, Australia.

Zyg Gregorek, who owns Anglers Paradise at Halwill, caught the shark in the middle of the night, just off the Great Barrier Reef. The nearest weigh station was at Yorkie?s Knob, a six-hour distance away by boat, but when the crew arrived they found there were no scales available to weigh the fish.

Eventually the weight of the giant fish had to be estimated at 1,128lb, based on the length and girth of the shark, and was ratified by the Fishing and Science Directorate of International Game Fish Association.

It was an eventful trip for Zyg, who is still recovering from cracked ribs following an incident involving mangrove branches and an impromptu swim in crocodile-infested waters.

Zyg said: ?I was elated with the trip overall and my thanks go to skipper John White of the boat Kamari for his assistance in achieving this unique task ? let?s now go for four species!?
