South Zeal Utd 4

Silverton 2

AFTER a 3-1 win away against Northlew the previous week, with two goals from Harley Cann and a penalty from Steve Pillivant, Zeal maintained their league position on Saturday with a convincing win against an improving Silverton.

It took Zeal 20 minutes to take the lead after missing three good chances early on. Steve Pillivant picked the ball up near the halfway line and ran through the defence before rounding the keeper and sliding it home.

The second goal came when Harley Cann beat his marker and cut into the penalty area, beating the Silverton keeper with a good finish at the near post. Zeal went three up just before half-time when Garry Smith sent Lee Gilbert away with a great through-ball. Lee took the ball to the byline and crossed to set up Tom Reilly for a simple tap in.

Zeal then lost the plot, giving too much possession to Silverton and paid the penalty when a cross from the left was headed down in the six-yard box and set up a simple finish that gave Neil Clift in the Zeal goal no chance.

Pillivant made the game safe for Zeal with a good finish 20 minutes from time. As in the first half, Zeal squandered several more good chances before Silverton cut the deficit to two when scrappy defending allowed them to convert another simple chance.

This week away to Chumleigh, kick-off 3pm.

Okehampton Argyle Seconds 2

Newtown 2

OKEHAMPTON earned a well deserved point against an experienced Newtown side who are starting to show good form.

Okehampton gave the visitors a couple of early scares with some neat passing football on a soft pitch, Tim Shaw missing the best of the chances.

Newtown showed good movement up front and Martyn Letchford and Chris Wills looked comfortable with Dave Grimes and Colin Deacon all getting in early tackles.

Newtown upset themselves by arguing about early offside calls and fell foul of this when their defence stopped for a decision. Daniel Pengelly coming back and not interfering with play was the distraction and Shaw carried on, slotting home past a livid defence with the referee playing advantage.

Newtown started to pressure and were rewarded when they took possession from a poor Okehampton throw-in and a fine through-ball found Scott Leyman on a one-on-one situation. The keeper brilliantly blocked the first effort but could do nothing with the classy follow up strike.

The second half saw Argyle have more possession but it was the visitors who took the lead when poor marking from a corner saw a powerful low drive take a deflection off the forward from close range.

Okehampton kept plugging away with close headers from Chris Drew and a good chance for Shaw. In the last minutes they battered the visitors and from a late corner Chris Drew slotted home from close range for a deserved point. This Saturday home to Exmouth, East Devon Cup 2pm kick-off.
