Devon and Exeter South Zeal Utd 1 Beacon Knights 1 WITH Zeal struggling this season and Beacon Knights top of the league the visitors came to the Recreation Ground expecting to get all three points — however, Zeal put up a great display and could have taken all three points themselves in the last few minutes of the game. Zeal kicked with the wind and slope at their backs in the first half and created some good chances but failed to take advantage as Darren Gilbert, Redd Cann and Scott Hooper all went close. At the other end the visitors were always dangerous but as in previous weeks Zeal's defence, with Lee Gilbert having another great game and Reg Wonnacott in the Zeal goal, always had the situation under control. Zeal took the lead after 30 minutes when from a corner the ball fell to Garry Smith 30 yards out. He took the ball forward five yards and hit a great shot into the far corner of the net. The second half was always going to be difficult for Zeal and so it proved as Beacon bombarded the Zeal goal with long throw-ins and corners. Tom Reilly won header after header during this period but unluckily for Zeal the visitors equalised when a long throw from the right skimmed off of the head of Julian Eavis and into the far corner of the net for the equaliser. Tom Reilly was always looking to get Zeal forward on the counter attack with well weighted through balls and on several occasions the home side could have gone 2-1 up. Zeal's best chance of the second half came when Tom put Scott Hooper through but his effort hit the far post and fell into the keeper's arms in the final minute. l This week South Zeal are away to Kentisbeare, kick off 3pm.
