Devon Senior cup

Beacon Knights 3

(after extra time)

PLAYING for 70 minutes with just 10 men Zeal produced a great performance to take the home side into extra time in the second round of the cup on Saturday.

Beacon Knights had most of the possession in the first half but the South Zeal defence and midfield managed to stem the tide of relentless pressure with some great defending, with Richard Horton, Lee Gilbert, and Reg Wonnacott outstanding.

Eventually the pressure told and the home side took the lead just before half time with a close range header after a corner from the right.

With the odds firmly stacked against Zeal it seemed possible that the home side would go on and win easily but Darren Prouse and Darren Gilbert were always dangerous on the break and during a period where Zeal were attacking more frequently a cross from Darren Gilbert found Darren Prouse who made no mistake from 10 yards.

With 20 minutes left of normal time Jamie Atherton came on to give South Zeal 11 players and although Zeal pushed for the winner the score ended 1-1 at full time. During the second period of extra time, a relieved home side, scored twice to go through to the next round
