A PUBLIC meeting to address the proposal of a youth centre in Gunnislake was a great success, according to organisers. The Gunnislake Youth Project is being spearheaded by a group of parents in the village who are determined to provide a social environment for their children. The campaign to set up a youth project was sparked by a questionnaire to youngsters which received a staggering response in just 24 hours ? 64 children gave overwhelming support to some kind of youth club or café. The meeting to address this situation, and the need for volunteers, was well attended by local councillors and around 50 Gunnislake residents, which including around 20 children. Liz Murray from the Gunnislake Youth Project said: ?It was a successful meeting. We had a few kids there who were 11, 14 and even 17 which was nice ? there were around 20 kids al- together. ?The meeting was just to let everyone know how far we have got and where we are going with it. The ball is now rolling and there is now a demand for the centre as everyone wants to see it happen.? After the meeting, Tracy Hunt said: ?As a local girl from this village I was overwhelmed by the support we received from three people who have been respected icons of this village for as long as I can remember. ?Dorothy Kirk, a historian with great passion for our community, spoke beautifully about the work of Richard Crocker, and a bequest he has made for the youth of the village. ?She also mentioned a sum of money left over from a now-defunct youth project which is sitting in an account waiting to be made use of. The youth project is just the beginning. Our efforts are about using our public facilities and bringing the community together.?
