TAVISTOCK?S popular Youth Café has been closed for the foreseeable future after a car rolled from the car park above, down a sloping bank and through a brick boundary wall into the café. The Devon County Council Youth Service supports the management of the café, in Pixon lane, below the Speedy Hire carpark. On Thursday lunchtime the hand-brake of a car in the car park failed and the vehicle rolled through the boundary brick wall and into the café?s exterior wall. The café has now been closed until structural engineers have carried out an assessment to see if the building is safe. The café provides a meeting place, snack and coffee bar for young people between the ages of 13 and 19, who can also use advice and information services from professionals and youth workers at the centre. The project has a voluntary group of local adults and young people as its trustees and board. The need for a youth café was identified as part of the Tavistock Market and Coastal Town initiative when a survey asked residents what facilities were needed in the area. The café was built and is staffed through grants secured by the board with additional funding from the county council. Principal youth officer Dillon Hughes said: ?The Tavistock Youth Café is less than a year old and has proved to be extremely popular. Around 150 young people use it every week for specific advice and information, and we have a core of around 18 regulars who use it to meet up. ?The café was developed after a great deal of hard work and lobbying from the young people particularly the youth council.? In the interim period until the centre is opened again, a programme of street-based youth work will be drawn up. A meeting will also be held with the local school to see if information and advice can be offered through one of its rooms.
