PEOPLE over 65 were given the opportunity to explore and try out the facilities and activities on offer at Tavistock Sports Centre last week, at a free 'Golden Oldies' open morning.

The event encouraged older people to visit the centre to view the swimming pool, tennis courts, badminton courts and fitness suite, and try them out for free, as well as getting some free advice on fitness and nutrition from members of staff.

Manager at the sports centre Nick Lane said the event was a success with some people trying out the facilities and others just looking for information.

He said: 'We had people mainly keen on finding out about lower impact things to do. One woman who came in used to play tennis for Surrey but hadn't played for 45 years — she came and had a game and really enjoyed it.

'Lots of people didn't realise what we had here, I think they were pleasantly surprised. Now they know they can just call up to book a court or come for a swim whenever they want.'
