A fledgling network that represent the interests of Devon's disabled and deaf community needs more young people to get involved.

It is also searching hard for the financial support that would allow members to travel to meetings.

The Devon Disability Network is supported by Living Options Devon, Devon County Council and NHS Devon.

It allows people to campaign and become involved in developing services.

Since its formation this summer representatives have been found for West Devon, Teignbridge and Exeter.

But organisers are keen the group reflects the needs and interests of all age groups.

Spokesman Diana Frost said: 'We need some young people involvement but we do not know how to get them on board.

'We have tried various organisations but all to no avail.

'In addition to a stronger youth voice the network is keen to ensure that those in rural areas are also included.

'We are finding that although we have willing people to be a representative travel expenses are a problem.

'Many parts of Devon are very rural and to get surgeries set up in these parts can be expensive.

'We have thought of trying e-mail forums and a couple of people have shown an interest but they have no computer or laptop and libraries are too far away.

'Of course some of those people interested are housebound and although the willingness to be involved is there, the funding is not.

'We will look at the possibility of obtaining grants from councillors' community funds but if anyone was able to offer us support we'd be so grateful.'

Those interested in becoming a representative or supporting the network are asked to contact Diane Silcock or Debbie Stafford at Living Options Devon, Isca House, Haven Road, Exeter, EX2 8DS.
