Carlsberg South Western League Callington Town 0 Liskeard Athletic 0 A NEW look Callington side took to the field on a cool August afternoon at Ginsters Marshfield Parc and that was not the only new thing on the day as the home side battled from first to last minute to gain their first ever point against illustrious opponents. The good weather brought another large crowd for this local derby and the majority were impressed by Town?s crop of new young players. One of them, Gareth Jones, went close to giving the home side a ninth minute lead but his 35-yard speculative shot just cleared the bar after he noticed Liskeard?s keeper Simon Zinn off his line. Liskeard began to make their presence felt as they dominated the middle of the half, highlighted by a 25th minute strike from James Alexander which cannoned off the crossbar. The second period was a mirror of the first with Athletic having the majority of possession but Callington battling for every ball. Steve Smeeth should have done better for Town on 76 minutes when he got the better of the Liskeard defenders only to shoot wide, while at the other end Callington?s young keeper Adam Fuller produced a fine fingertip save in the dying seconds to to deny Harry Richardson and captain Luke McPherson capped a fine performance with a goal line block to deny former Town favourite Matt Hawke. At the final whistle the cheers from the home fans showed their delight in the improved performance of this young Town side.
