THE second round of the South West of England Open Winter foursomes competition, sponsored this year by BuddenSmale West Insure, was played at Yelverton Golf Club recently.
The youthful team of Tom Squire and Joe Yorke, who had such a remarkable run in last year?s competition, entered the fray.
It was a finely balanced game, against Churston Club secretary Simon Bawden and his playing partner Christine Clayton, with both sides playing excellent golf, both Bawden and Squire?s putters being on fire, neither player missing a putt.
The coup de grace was made however by young Joe, aged 11, who sank a 60 foot downhill putt on the 18th hole to win the match.
The north Devon pair of Chris Gill and Richard Herring played exceptional golf, being six under when they concluded the match on the 12th hole; their opponents M Carey and L Soby from Okehampton were simply overwhelmed.
Several matches were beyond 18 holes, including Dave and Paul Lamey from Yelverton finally beating Ian Watson (Yelverton) and Paul Sumner (Elfordleigh) on the 19th, David Crawford and P Hendy from Elfordleigh also needed 19 holes to fight off the determined pair of P Holdsworth (China Fleet) and Mark Weeks (Wrangaton).
Six professionals went out of the competition including Ashley Moon (Okehampton).
