Tavistock v Dafen (friendly)
PLAYED at the Ring, on a beautiful, sunny afternoon, Tavistock's first game of the season saw them entertain Welsh side, Dafen.
In a high scoring game the visitors just prevailed by three runs.
Dafen batted first and an excellent opening partnership of 120 by Williams and Evans gave them a strong start. However, the young Tavistock side responded well by restricting the eventual total to 230, Sean Cleave being the pick of the bowlers with 2-21 off his 8 overs. After an unfortunate start, with Josh Stephens running himself out without facing a ball, Tavistock responded well, led by Will Simpson who, on his return to the club, made an excellent 61.
Dave Manning kept the scoreboard ticking over rapidly and, helped by 15 years-old Rhys Davies, they continued to close down on the total. However, a flurry of wickets towards the end gave Dafen a thrilling three run victory, but Tavistock will be pleased that such a young side made such a good contest of it.
After the match the visitors entertained the supporters with their own excellent stand-up comedian and some stirring Welsh singing. This was a great start to the 2010 season with entertainment both on and off the pitch from a team Tavistock would hope to welcome again.
