IT was the Tamar and Tavy Gig Club's mens turn last week to trek to Newquay for the 40th Gig Championship event. Huge crowds watched the spectacle and the Olympian Sharron Davies presented the prizes at the closing ceremony.
In this event crews draw lots to decide whose boat they will row in. Tamar and Tavy fielded an unusally young crew of Tom Sargeant, Chris Parry, Russell Baylis, Sam Twine, Andy Morton and Johnny O.
The conditions were favourable with a low swell and good visibility and the crew rowed a brilliant race, overtaking Looe and Mylor to come fourth in the heat and 60th overall — a result to be really proud of.
Sam Twine moved up from the junior squad to row in the mens' crew and had such a good race.
This winter Tamar and Tavy Gig Club will be continuing with their training schedule of indoor rowing, circuit training and outdoor rowing at weekends when it takes delivery of its new gig.
The training is for members only but if you are interested in joining the club please see the website for contact details http://www.tamarandtavygigclub.co.uk">www.tamarandtavygigclub.co.uk
