ONE hundred children will converge on Bedford Square on April 28 in a mass event to celebrate World Dance Day as part of the Tavistock Music and Arts Festival.

Pupils from Tavistock Community Primary School, St Peter's Primary School and Whitchurch Primary School will be taking part in three dance sequences, introduced by the mayor of West Devon, at 2pm.

Traditional and contemporary dance styles will be fused in a celebration of the building of the town hall during 1861 and 1864 and the heritage of the Tamar Valley.

Following the three dances there will be a Greek circle dance and freestyle dancing for all.

The event will be filmed for a documentary on dance in the south west, entitled 'The Art of Dance', to be screened in the autumn.

Tavistock Community Dance Group is also involved and West Devon Borough Council and Dance in Devon is supporting the event.

l There will also be plenty of dancing as well as live music and entertainment on the evening of Friday April 29 (Royal Wedding Day) in Tavistock Town Hall for a celebratory ceilidh featuring 'Walter Shortage and The Hose Pipe Band'.

There will be three community dance showcase performances by Tavistock Community Dance Group, Horrabridge Youth Dance Group, the Sheila Bucchanan Belly Dancers, including break dance and Bollywood style routines

World Dance Day material has been incorporated in the dances and everyone coming to the event will also learn of some of the steps to make a new social World Dance Day ceilidh dance.

Tickets, £7 and £4 concessions, can be obtained from the Wharf on 01822 611166.
