MORE than 100 young people will be holding West Devon?s banner aloft when they compete in the Olympic-style Devon Youth Games. Final preparations are being made for the big day, Saturday June 25, at Newton Abbot. Youngsters taking part are aged from 7 to 15 and attend schools from across West Devon. The borough team will be taking part in athletics, aquathlon (swim/run), cricket, hockey, netball, tag rugby and tennis. Around 1,000 young people from all over Devon take part in the games which is being opened by Mary King, who won a silver medal as part of the GB Equestrian three-day event team at the Athens Olympics. Team manager Tammy Messenger, West Devon Borough Council?s sports development officer, is quietly confident the team will do well. She said: ?Everyone taking part has trained very hard over the last few weeks and I know on the day they will do their very best. ?One of the most important things that comes from the Youth Games is that young people get the opportunity to try out different sports and that means we can really develop our work with them.? The event has been running for seven years with each of the ten local authorities in Devon taking it in turns to host the games. It is made possible through major support from Sport England and local sponsors DML. The games will have a distinctly Olympic feel to them with opening and closing ceremonies and medal presentations. There will also be trophies for the overall local authority winners and for fair play. For further information contact Tammy Messenger on 01822 813628.
