MORE than 30 young music lovers from across Devon came together for a week of music-making workshops in Okehampton, this month. The Summer Music Club, run by Okehampton Youth Chorus and folk arts development charity Wren Music, gave 8 to 14 years olds the chance to try out a wide range of instruments from Wren Music?s extensive stock, and to develop singing and songwriting skills ? as well as making new friends. The week ended with a packed concert for family and friends at Fairplace Church Hall and big smiles all round. One young participant said, ?My playing has improved a lot, considering I could only play one tune on the guitar and now I can play a lot more.? Parents were also enthusiastic. ?The children had the opportunity to play instruments they don?t usually play, and to discover new instruments,? said one. ?I am so impressed as to how much has been achieved in such a short space of time ? utterly fantastic,? said another. One of the outcomes of the week is that the young musicians and their parents want more next year, with music-making workshops in half term breaks or Easter too, to complement the Summer Music Club. The Summer Music Club sessions were led by Wren Music?s team of award-winning professional musicians, singers, songwriters, and music educators, all of whom have many years experience performing, and leading workshops across Devon and farther, and were supported by the Local Network Fund through Devon Community Foundation, and investment from Devon County Council and Arts Council England South West.
