THREE Kelly College students, who are from the earthquake devastated city of Christchurch in New Zealand, are organising a mixed musical event to raise money for the disaster appeal, writes Sam Hughes.

The three were living in Christchurch until just before Christmas. They have since been staying with their grandfather, Philip Davies, the owner of the Bedford Hotel and the Two Bridges Hotel.

Philip and his grandchildren, Julia, 15, Charles, 13 and Ginny, 10, who attends Kelly College Prep School, are organising the 'Quake, Rattle and Roll' music night to raise money for the New Zealand Earthquake Appeal.

It is hoped the evening will include a mix of musical genres suitable for everybody — a classical pianist, a folk band, guitarist, trombonist and singer and perhaps a choir.

Philip said news of the earthquake had stunned the children: 'Their father is still in Christchurch and they've had lots of friends telling them harrowing tales.'

The three students have already received several hundreds of pounds worth of donations from well-wishers and hope to make more from the sale of tickets.

As well as musical performances, there will be a cake stall and an auction, including prizes ranging from champagne and hampers, to meals for two.

The event is at the Bedford Hotel on Sunday March 13 at 7.30pm. Tickets are £5, with concessions for students and are available from the Times office in Brook Street, Crebers, the Bedford Hotel and the Two Bridges Hotel.
