SOUNDS like Noel Thompson (Letters, June 29) is a definite ?NIMBY? himself, going out of his way to moan on about 4x4s. If you move to the country, expect to come across agricultural vehicles and 4x4s! With respect, what Mr Thompson failed to realise is that Gordon Brown thought up a higher tax bracket for one reason only: to make himself ?popular? as a vote winner, in an effort to usurp Mr Blair, using ?the environment? to conveniently piggyback his agenda. This was done in response to the wealthy and irresponsible of London driving £40,000 impractical Porsche Cayenne type 4x4s, taking kids to school and shopping. Yet another example of government not being able to see or care further than the M25. When I have been called out to attend an emergency in the middle of an icy, slippery, snowy night, without doubt I would not have made it without my very old but trusty 4x4 four-wheel drive. There are many ?irresponsible? drivers about, in all types of vehicle, no matter what their effect on the environment. G Sansom Tavistock
