NEWS has reached Australia that the City Fathers of Plymouth have in mind the taking over of our ancient township, and this old Tavistokian is asking you all to fight as did Drake when the dastardly Dons had the same thing in mind. Set up barricades on West Bridge where once I lived in a cottage. Deny them access to where Drake was born only half a mile from where I was born in 1927. Stop them from claiming, as they do now, that Drake was born in Plymouth... He was born in Tavistock. I ask the mayor to visit Drake's Drum and beat the daylights out of it in the hope that his spirit will awake and aim the guns of the 'Golden Hinde' towards Plymouth. Although I no longer live in Tavistock, my heart is and always will be there, and I'd like my town to remain a town, not a district of Plymouth. They have Argyle, let us keep our town.
