TREKKERS from across the globe descended on Dartmoor to take part in the annual Dartmoor Yomp, this year raising money for the Royal Marines' Charitable Trust Fund.

Disabled and able-bodied serving and former serving service men and women trekked across 12 miles of moorland from Bickleigh Camp to the Plume of Feathers pub in Princetown.

Around 210 yompers took part in the third annual walk, as well as around 25 members of the Hasler Company.

This year's organiser Yorkie Malone, from Lamerton, said it was a brilliant day: 'We had people from Dubai, Spain, the Falkland Islands and even Cornwall take part. The majority were Royal Marines but we had a section from the Army, brought down by Lance Corporal Sammy Langdon.

'We all met up at the Plume of Feathers on the Friday night, camped overnight, and Holman's Coaches took us to Bickleigh Camp at 9am the next morning.

'Everyone set off in two-minute intervals to walk back to the Plume. This year on the route we had a slight diversion because Steven Spielberg was making his film, but we had no problems with it.

'Overall it was an exceptionally good day. The weather on the Friday night was horrible, but luckily people had decent tents and didn't get washed away, then on Saturday the weather cleared.'

Yorkie said he did not yet know the amount the yomp raised as money was still to be collected: 'At the moment we've got about £4,000 but we've got more sponsorship money to come in.'
