Devon Cricket League E Division Yelverton Bohemians 1st XI v Honiton (A) YELVERTON made their first ever trip to Honiton and came away with 20 points after a hard fought victory. Having won the toss, skipper Rob Guy had no hesitation in batting. But, the excellent Tansley (4- 47) soon sent opener Brain back to the pavilion when his accurate medium pacers found the edge. Yelverton rebuilt around opener Paul Farnham (70) who batted through to the last 10 overs and was well supported by Terry Stevens (24) on his debut and Mike Chetwynd (41) who put on 76 for the sixth wicket with Farnham. Yelverton finished on 201, having lost their last 4 wickets for a disappointing 15 and handed Honiton an extra over to bat. Brinsford (4-40) supported Tansley well and Hill (2-22) chipped in with two late wickets. Honiton's reply started with a flourish, both Canniford (37) and Tansley (31) dismissing some wayward bowling as 50 came up without loss. The introduction of Brain (3-39) brought the breakthrough as Canniford was bowled. Honiton captain Mattravers (26) came in and took the score up to 119-4 with Honiton needing only 4 runs an over to win. But it was 16 year old Rob Bennett who came on and bowled an accurate spell of medium fast bowling to claim figures of 4-11 and took the game away from the home side. Stevens (2-32) returned and Honiton were dismissed for 149 having lost their last 6 wickets for 30 runs. This was a hard fought win for Yelverton against tough opposition which takes them to top of the table. Man of the match: Paul Farnham. Result — Yelverton (20) beat Honiton (7) by 52 runs and are joint leaders of the E Division with Whitchurch with 40 points out of a possible 40. This week Yelverton travel to Woodbury. Devon Cricket 2nd XI League C Division Yelverton Bohemians 2nd XI v Ottery St Mary II OTTERY were the visitors to a sunny Langton Park on Saturday. Skipper Kevin Beare won the toss and decided to bat first. But Beare did not last long and was dismissed with the score on 7. Dan Vince was joined at the wicket by Ricky McDowell and they forged a parthership of 57 before Vince fell for a well played 33. Gerry Keen joined McDowell at the wicket and their partnership ended on 85 when McDowell fell to a catch behind. Yunis Suliman joined Keen at the wicket and mid innings drinks were taken with the score on 89 - 3. Keen (4) lost his wicket straight after the drinks break followed soon after by Dave Scott for a duck. With the score on 89 - 5 and having lost 3 wickets for 4 runs, repair work was required. Vice-captain Chris Pearson joined Suliman in the middle and some watchful batting mixed in with the occasional lusty blow enabled Yelverton to regain their momentum with a partnership of 37. Suliman (24) departed with the score on 126 and Jerry Warland strode to the wicket. Throwing caution to the wind Warland struck some lusty blows and with Pearson (27) took the score upto 155 before Pearson was caught at square leg. Warland (14) marshalled the tail and despite losing Andy Alford for nought, Adrian Hood with some 'silky' drives off the front and back foot took the total up to 180 before Hood was bowled, having a heave across the line by the first ball of the final over leaving Tony Carter undefeated on 4 no. Ottery bowler Richardson finshing with figures of 5-40. From 89-5 skipper Beare was satisfied with a total of 180. Accurate bowling came from Yelverton's opening bowlers Hood and Carter and the pressure soon reaped rewards as Carter got a ball to bounce sharply to have Flicker (0) caught by a diving Warland at first slip. After one close lbw shout Carter had a similar appeal upheld to send back the other opening batsman with the score on 38. Ottery then had a period of ascendancy as Mann (37) and skipper Iley (14) tucked into some loose deliveries. This third wicket partnership was broken on 75 by Dan Vince who had Mann caught at the wicket. Vince bowled his 13 overs straight through for the excellent figures of 13-2-28-4. Vince also accounted for Ottery skipper Iley to leave the score on 83-4 with overs running out fast. Two wickets fell to Vince and Suliman bagged a brace as wickets fell steadily and Ottery nominated to pat back the final few overs for the draw. The returning Carter had the final recognised batsman Burns (29) caught on the boundary by Pearson off the final delivery of the innings as he looked for a boundary and an extra batting point. Ottery closed their innings on 147 - 9. Man of the match: Dan Vince. Yelverton are in third place behind Ivybridge & Kingsbridge. This week Yelverton host table topping Ivybridge II at Langton Park (2pm start) Result — Yelverton II (14) drew with Ottery St Mary II (9) Tamar Cricket League 'B' Section Yelverton Bohemians 3rd XI v Tavistock III (A) SKIPPER Ashleigh Phillips lost the toss and Tavistock elected to bat first. With six bowlers available, Munton, O'Hanlon, Roe, Tamsett, Tonts and Ben Spear, it was a fortuitous position for a captain. Early wickets were claimed by both evergreen Terry Roe (3-18) and Matt Tonts (3-20). Ben Spear and Paul O'Hanlon (2-8) wrapped up the innings (in 21.3 overs) with a further three wickets between them, the home side being dismissed for 62. An excellent bowling display on a green wicket assisted by some outstanding catching, the pick of which was a stunner by vice-captain Lee Johns. Adam King and Gul Khan opened the batting reply. King still trying to get off the mark for the season after being run out on nought last week was the first to go for 0 and he was replaced by former skipper Brian Spear who dug in against accurate bowling. But after reaching 26 a hamstring injury got the better of him and he was forced to retire. The remaining opener Khan fell for 16 and was replaced by skipper Phillips who did unfortunately not trouble the scorers and departed for a duck. Lee Johns and Matt Tamsett saw Yelverton home in only 16 overs with Tamsett hitting the winning runs with an imperious pull for 4 through mid-wicket, ending on 10 no. Result — Yelverton III (19) beat Tavistock III (2) by 7 wickets.
