Devon Cricket League Yelverton First XI v Roborough YELVERTON made it five wins in a row by defeating local rivals Roborough by 84 runs. The home side lost the toss and were asked to bat in the drizzle on a green wicket. Paul Farnham (36) and Geoff Brain (28) put on 81 for the first wicket before both departing in quick succession. Sanjiv (23) and Tim Rutherford (25) took the score up to 141 before the loss of five wickets for 10 runs. However, an eighth wicket stand of 65 by Rob Guy (29 no) and 14 year old Charles Morris (26) took Yelverton up to 218. For Roborough Williams and House both took 4-53. The Roborough openers struggled against the pace of Sanjiv (3-22) and lost wickets at regular intervals despite being up with the run rate. Charles Morris (2-26) came on to bowl a fiery spell to remove the middle order and Rob Guy (3-13) polished off the tail. For Roborough only Goodchild (28) and Williams (23) put up much resistance as they were bowled out for 144, aided by 39 extras. Devon Cricket League Ivybridge v Yelverton Second XI Yelverton Seconds suffered their first loss in the Devon League this season going down by seven wickets away to Ivybridge. Despite losing the toss, Yelverton?s openers Kevin Beare (30) and Steve West started brightly putting on 53 for the first wicket off 15 overs. The loss of both openers in quick succession slowed down the scoring rate, but middle order contributions from Gerry Keen (59), Dave Scott (20) and Yunus Suleman (35 no) took the score to 201. The unavailability of injured skipper Tony Carter and opening bowler Adrian Hood was to prove decisive as Yelverton produced their poorest fielding display this season, their depleted attack allowing the Ivybridge batsmen to get off to a flyer with some undisciplined bowling and a number of dropped catches in the field. Only stand-in skipper Chris Pearson (1-43 off 14) was able to provide any measure of control and Ivybridge knocked off the 202 runs required with the minimum of fuss winning by seven wickets with 16 balls to go. Despite the loss, Yelverton remained in the top three in the division. Moorland Bats Tamar League Yelverton 3rd XI v Launceston - THE home side won their first league game of the season after a number of near misses, defeating Launceston by 66 runs at Crapstone. Skipper Brian Spear led the way with 32 and was ably supported by Kevin Vince with a patient knock of 29 in the Yelverton total of 158-8. The bowling honours were taken by veteran Terry Roe who bagged 5-25 to help dismiss Launceston for 93.
