COMPETITIONS for the ladies of Yelverton Golf Club have begun in earnest.

The team, competing in the Devon County Ladies? Golfing Association?s scratch competition, won their first match on May 9, at home against Torquay, six matches to one.

The Devon League team have played two matches. On April 28 they played away at Teign Valley, where Yelverton won by ten points to six points. On May 7 they played away at Portmore, a tricky, but interesting nine-hole course near Barnstaple, where Yelverton won 13 points to four.

The Shelagh Creasy bowl team played an away match at Ilfracombe on May 6. This is a challenging course, and despite a brave fight the team lost.

On May 1 the ladies played the May medal competition in combination with the Cyril Baker qualifying competition. The winner of the silver division was Alison Measelle with a net 76; runner-up was Kay Creaven with a net 78 and third was Barbara Perriton with a net 78. The winner of the bronze division was Julie Percy with a net 78; runner-up was Aine Binchy with a net 81 and third was Pat Taylor with a net 83.

The eight players with the best scores qualified to play in the match-play knockout tournament for the Cyril Baker Challenge Cup.

On May 8 the ladies played the May stableford competition, in combination with a competition for the Phyllis Easlick Salver. The winner of the silver division was Penny Hunter with 38 points; runner-up was Laura Eastwood with 35 points and third was Alison Measelle with 34 points.

The bronze division was won by Angie Howard with 37 points; runner up was Georgie Evans with 33 points and third was Pat Chambers also with 33 points.

The winner of the Phyllis Easlick Salver was Penny Hunter, who is the daughter of the late Phyllis Easlick. ladies? captain at Yelverton, many years ago.

Laura Eastwood and Gilly Jarvis have been selected to represent Devon in the Devon County Ladies? Golf Association?s first team this week in the first team inter-county match week at Trevose.
