A WEST Devon man's life-long interest in the South Tetcott Hunt and many years of research have culminated in the release of a new book chronicling the hunt's history.

Maurice Thomas, of Highampton, released his book 'South Tetcott, The History and the Hunt' earlier this month, which has been formed from the early 18th century diaries of Squire John Arscott, the writings of Phil Back and numerous other personalities through to the present day.

Maurice moved to Highampton in 1975, which is when he joined the South Tetcott Hunt and acted as joint master for 10 years.

Mr Thomas said: 'I have had an interest in hunting since I was a young boy, and when we moved down here I got involved in the hunt. I've been interested in writing the book since 2000.

'I have been researching for a long time, and then I had major heart surgery about two years ago and that's when I thought I needed to put it all together into a book.'

Mr Thomas has researched the hunt's history through old documents, hunt records and numerous newspaper reports that date back many years, many of which are included in the text and appendixes attached.

Mr Thomas is also a keen photographer and has included hundreds of his own photographs in the book as well as archival photographs.

The book was launched earlier this month by West Devon and Torridge MP Geoffrey Cox at Bovacott Park, Brandis Corner, with lots of people attending.

'I am very proud of the book,' Mr Thomas added. 'There are lots of people interested in the hunt and suddenly the book has taken lots of people's interest.

'Initially we had 300 copies printed, but we have sold more than half already.'

The 400-page, hardback book is available directly from Mr Thomas at Burden Cottage, Burdon Lane, Highampton, Beaworthy, Devon, EX21 5LX, for £39.95 plus £6 towards postage and packaging.
