A DARTMOOR hotel is hoping to raise plenty of money for the moorland horses of South West Equine Protection (SWEP) as part of a year-long campaign in support of the pony sanctuary.
The Moor Things Vintage and Lovely Spring Garden Fete on May 4 is one of a range of fundraising initiatives introduced by the Moorland Garden Hotel to help generate income and awareness for the neighbouring charity, which is threatened with closure after being let down by the company managing its donations. A special children's entertainment area, supported by SWEP at the vintage fun day, will offer traditional games, including classic pedal cars and hook the duck, and families will be able to meet and pet some of the ponies.
Donation envelopes and cuddly ponies have been placed in each of the hotel's bedrooms along with a newsletter and information about the trust. There are also collection tins in the bars and reception and staff are set to muck in at the stables for a day.
Andrew Jenkins, general manager at the hotel, said: 'With the Dartmoor ponies wandering past on a daily basis it seemed appropriate to team up with SWEP to raise money and awareness for a cause right on our doorstep.
'The charity will have a presence at a number of our events this year and we're hoping we can make a significant contribution to help them continue their good work.'
Welcoming the launch of the appeal, SWEP fundraiser Abi Clarke said: 'We provide life-saving care and challenge cruelty to Moorland ponies across Devon and Cornwall. We're delighted to have the support of the Moorland Garden Hotel.'
The garden fete is open from 10.30am to 4pm with £2 admission, under 12s go free.
