MUSIC in Okehampton has never been in a stronger position and with a solid 2007 to build on, this year looks set to be even better. Okehampton-based folk and community arts development charity Wren Music report that in 2007 they consolidated their position by developing folk song and music on a local, regional, national and international level. They produced work at both community and professional levels. Throughout the year there were various highlights which included the Wren Summer Music Club in Okehampton, the Baring-Gould Folk Festival and Wren musicians Marilyn Tucker, Paul Wilson and Matt Norman, travelling to Quimper in Brittany, to act as songwriters in residence at a multinational European Union conference. Alongside Wren's many projects there were ongoing participatory folk songs and music sessions taking place on a weekly basis throughout Devon. This year will see Wren celebrate their 25th anniversary and they hope to stabilise their position within the arts and heritage sector in Devon and the South West. Artistic director Marilyn Tucker said: 'I have people of all ages telling me what an impact Wren has made on their lives. I am really proud of what we have been able to achieve over the years, growing from just two of us to a sizeable organisation providing opportunities for local musicians to work regularly in Devon. 'Wren is also now regularly involved in music and song development at a national level. This year we have a great programme planned, including a three-week visit by young singers from Cape Town and favourites such as the Piping Hot Bagpipe Weekend, Exeter Schools' Song Festival and the Baring-Gould Folk Song School and festival.'
