PHASE I of a major rebuilding programme is about to start at Castle Drogo. This initial stage is expected to continue until spring 2007 and will focus on the chapel?s leaking roof and the windows in the west facing wall of the castle. Enclosed scaffolding has been erected to cover the chapel wing and work is due to commence shortly. Granite blocks will be transported on a specially constructed ?train? that runs on rails around the scaffolding?s walkways. A spokesperson for the National Trust said the challenges posed by Lutyens? designs and materials had been the subject of one of the most intensive conservation and building research projects conducted by the Trust. Repairs to the roof and parapets will use materials that will become the waterproof membrane and flex in response to environmental conditions. The mortar used for repointing walls will be lime-based, but will not leach ?free? lime that would stain the castle walls. The windows are made from small panes of glass held in place by lead bars, and these have been badly affected by the weather. Following the work there will be a period of monitoring to guarantee effectiveness before Phase II begins on the main castle.
