WORK has begun on a £313,000 project to replace the roof on a Tavistock School.
Scaffolding was erected around St Rumon's Infants School last week and temporary traffic lights have been in operation in the road outside the school.
A spokesman for Devon County Council said: 'It's a Listed building so it's taken a while to get the permissions sorted out.
'We do regular condition checks on all our schools and it came up that this really needed to be done.'
The spokesman said the county was using Delabole slate on the new roof — the work is expected to be finished by the end of March.
Disruption to traffic caused by the work will be kept to a minimum as far as possible.
