A 27-YEAR-old woman was taken to hospital with serious injuries after a car she was travelling in collided with a tractor last Friday near Okehampton.

Two fire crews from Okehampton spent 45 minutes cutting the woman free from the wreckage of the car which her husband had been driving.

The accident occurred just before 4pm on the Okehampton to Holsworthy Road at Fowley Cross and involved a tractor towing a dung spreader.

Okehampton Fire Station officer Ian Donovan said the rescue attempt was a 'very delicate job' because the passenger side door had become wrapped around the tractor tyre and the woman's legs were trapped. The extensive damage to the vehicle also made the situation difficult, he said.

Devon Air Ambulance transported the woman, who is from Wiltshire, to the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital. She suffered multiple injuries to the left side of her body but they were not life-threatening, police said.

The road was cleared by 6.30pm.
