Jeffery?s Cup Bere Alston Utd 2 Mevagissy 1 A SEVERELY depleted Bere team with five players unavailable were made to work hard for this win. Mevagissy sat back and let Bere press forward and tried to hit on the counter attack. Once again Bere?s missed chances caused concern as they were made and missed. Ross Hann arrived from work with 35 minutes gone. Bere brought him on as a sub and his first shot brought a brilliant save from Mevagissy?s keeper. Within minutes Craig Howells turned a shot round the post for Bere. The second half was the same with more chances going begging, until Ross Hann collected a centre and beat a defender to shoot past the keeper Bere tried to run out time and with five minutes remaining a Bere clearance was smashed back for a good equaliser. Bere were stung into action and went back in front from the kick-off, with Darren Smalley applying the finish to a centre. The lead was nearly thrown away as in the last second a dawdling Bere player took on five Mevagissy players and as they bore down on goal Craig Howells saved the shot for Bere to win. On Saturday Bere Alston United take on Morchard Bishop in the semi-final of the Devon Senior Cup at the Down, 2pm kick-off.
