IT was disappointing that Matthew Jackson (Letters, January 20) repeated the spurious arguments delivered at the public meeting on the Den Brook Valley Wind farm proposal in North Tawton on January 14. There are genuine concerns about landscape value to be balanced against the consensus that we need to take urgent action to tackle climate change. It is right to question the Government?s failure to deliver on CO2 reduction targets overall. However, they have started to deliver against the renewable energy target of 10% by 2010. Wind energy is the technology that is available and ready to provide clean and sustainable power immediately. John Burnett MP?s suggestion of a Royal Commission would result in a talking shop that would delay further action. He and Angela Browning MP (the Conservatives cancelled wave power research when in government), have jumped on the bandwagon provided by a very vocal minority opposed to wind farms. This is irresponsible. Let us have an honest debate about where to site land-based wind turbines in Devon. They are a necessary part of a sustainable future. There are more difficult choices to be made very soon if we are to face up to the reality of climate change. Andrew Clements Blackstreet House South Tawton
