Yelverton 2nds v Shobrook Park
YELVERTON Seconds returned from East Devon on Saturday evening with their second successive maximum 20 point haul, which took them to the top of the Second XI B Division table.
Shobrooke won the toss and asked the visitors to bat first. Yelverton lost opener A Taylor caught at the wicket with only 11 on the board, but skipper Jason Degg (29) and Rich West took the total to 23 before West got a leading edge and was caught at cover for six.
Veteran Gerry Keen hit a quickfire 17 before he was caught in the gully off Goodman. Youngster David Ackford was the next to go, adjudged LBW for five off Wheeler and the innings was in some disarray at 76 – 5 with only half the overs gone. Next pair Jamie South and Fraser Coleman put together a partnership of 68 for the sixth wicket. South was the main aggressor, using his size to good use hitting a number of towering sixes, well supported by Coleman.
When South was bowled for 60 with the score on 144, vice-captain Chris Pearson joined Coleman and the pair put on 26 for the next wicket. Coleman was caught at slip for 22 and the Pearson and young wicket-keeper batsman Jez Croymosan put on 49 for the eighth wicket with Pearson finishing on 46 n/o and Croymosan run-out for 15 off the last ball of the innings.
A total of 219 – 8 was a good recovery with the Bohemians scoring 143 – 3 in the second half of their innings.
Shobrooke started their reply slowly with the Bohemians opening bowlers Tony Carter and Geraint Heath soon hitting their line and length. Heath struck with the score on 18 trapping Phillips LBW for 9. Andy Taylor replaced Carter and immediately struck to remove Blackeney for 3 caught by Coleman at mid-wicket and he was soon followed by S Reddick caught off a top edge at square-leg by South also off Taylor.
With the score on 47-3 off 18 overs Shobrooke were behind the clock, but new batsman Wheeler had other ideas, depositing Taylor (2-30) for 2 huge sixes out of the ground.
This prompted a change in the bowling, South replacing Taylor and West coming on at the other end. Wheeler continued to the thump the odd boundary, but West removed the remaining opener Jones for 46 with the score on 105.
With Wheeler continuing to prosper, Coleman (1-12) replaced West (1-31) and in his second over removed the dangerous Wheeler for 60 to leave Shobrooke on 145 – 5 off 38 overs.
The return of Carter precipitated a mini-collapse as they slumped to 152-9, Carter taking 3-5 in his second spell for figures of 11-2-26-3 and Pearson (1-4) bowling Shobrooke skipper V Reddick. Heath returned for the last over and with his second ball bowled Manning to seal the win by 56 runs.
Next week the Bohemians are at home to take on visitors Alphington II at Langton Park, 2pm.
