THOUGH the weather didn't exactly help the Okehampton Golf Club team on Sunday who were playing Tavistock in the Mail on Sunday tournament, it didn't dishearten the home team who romped to an emphatic victory over the visitors who had made it through to the ninth round last year. This time Del Owen playing G Gorman went first and won 3-2 for Okehampton. Team- mate Malcolm Hooper went out next against L Wakely and won 4-2. Kevin Cornwall though last out secured the important third win against A Gorman 4-3. Okehampton's Paul Skidmore playing A Waddle and Keith Harkness playing T Dodd both finished early, as the weather had got really cold and the wind was up to gale force with sleet making things most uncomfortable. The pair earned an honourable half making the final scoreline 4-1 to Okehampton. Sunday also saw a mixed greensomes Stableford played followed by a Mothers' Day lunch. This competition enjoyed good scores despite the conditions and Christine and Ray Stevens won with an excellent 38 points. Second place was a closely fought battle between the lady captain Eileen Piper with her husband Ray, and Lin and Nick Atkinson. Both teams scored 37 but Lin and Nick gained second place on countback of last three holes. Saturday was a qualifying Stableford, scoring was good and a few handicaps came tumbling down. Pete Murphy won division one with a fantastic 47 points playing off a 10 handicap, he now plays off eight. Steve Race was second with 38, third was Lee Carey with 37 on the back nine from Paul Skidmore also 37.
