THE week started on a high for Sir Francis Drake Bowling Club Tavistock member and Devon County Bowling Association junior vice-president Roger Bawden, who won one of the prizes for the highest scoring rink, at the association millennium invitation match held at Topsham on Sunday.
Some 90 players and officials took part in the day's event which was followed by a banquet.
He came back to earth with a bit of a bump on Monday when playing in the Top Club match at Plymouth Sir Francis Drake Club where Tavistock men lost on three of the five rinks played.
Best personal performance of the day went to Tavistock youngster Clive Jago, who notched up a creditable ten shots in his singles match against current England International David Cutler.
The ladies' section matches broke even over the week, first losing to the Plymouth Sir Francis Drake ladies' section on Monday in the Inter-Club competition, then winning 40-30 when playing Yelverton Ladies, on Tuesday
Plymstock Bowling Club was the venue for Thursday's mixed match which Tavistock won 87-80, winning three of the four rinks. Tavistock's highest winning rink, with a score of 25-11, was skipped by club captain Mike Allen.
The men's team won their Evening League fixture against Peverell Park on Friday by 91-63, losing on only one of the four rinks.
Saturday saw a mixed team travel to Barnstaple for the club's annual match with the United Services Bowling Club. Led by new ladies' captain Catriona Meek, the team won three of the six rinks, but lost the overall match by eight points.
Tavistock's highest winning rink was skipped by newly elevated skip John Smith, who won by ten points.
This Sunday (21st) sees the second of the club's early open days when members of the public are invited to come along between 10am and 4pm and try their hand at the game with the help of club members.
