CROWDS descended on Weir Quay at the weekend to watch six teams tackle the mud in the annual Bere Ferrers Watersports.

The six teams — Sister Sludge and the Beached Buoy, Bere Consolidated, Weir Quay Pirates, The Dream Team, O'Balls and Bitty — took to the mud to battle through several testing games before taking to the river.

After giving their all it was a very tight finish with only a point difference at the end, with Bere Consolidated being crowned the winners with 21 points. In second place was Bitty with 20 points, then O'Balls, 19 points, Sister Sludge and the Beached Buoy, 18 points, Weir Quay Pirates, 16 points, and the Dream Team with 14 points.

For people not competing in the watersports there were stalls, games, a barbecue and bar for spectators.

Margaret Willmott, who organised the event with Margaret Ball, said: 'Everything went very well. Everyone enjoyed themselves in the mud. We had a very good day for it and crowds of people came down to watch.

'A good time was had by all.

'On behalf of myself and Margaret Ball, we would like to say thank you to all those who took part in the games and helped on stalls, helped to put up the marquees the day before and who helped to clean up afterwards.

'Thanks also to all the sponsors.'
