There will be a record number of exhibitors vying for attention in the flower show at the Royal Cornwall Show in June. Many of them will have an eye on a medal for their display, says section chairman Ken Willcock. The prestigious 'gold award' is much-prized. 'With nearly 50 exhibitors including many long- term supporters and a good few new ones, there will be guaranteed quality,' he said. 'There will be many nationally known names amongst the exhibitors and I really think that anyone thinking of going to the Chelsea or Hampton Court shows needn't bother. They have got it all here without the travel!' One exhibit that achieved great success last year was mounted by the Lifton Strawberry Fields Farm Shop. It was their first time at the show and they knew straight away it was an immediate hit. 'Being right on the border, if you like, at the gateway to both Cornwall and Devon, we had loads of people come straight here after seeing us at the show,' said proprietor Jo Mounce. 'There's nothing like taking your business to the people. We sent four of our staff there and it was excellent.' With its own 155-acre farm, the shop specialises in fresh produce and home-made products such as bread, fruit and preserves. 'We were amongst the flowers and our stand was decorated with growing strawberries and a range of other fresh produce. 'I think we took people by surprise a bit and the reaction certainly took us by storm. There was a bit of a "wow" factor all round,' said Jo. At this year's show, Ken and his colleagues have redesigned the layout in the right-angled marquee. 'There will be a more open feel to the marquee, especially in the bend so visitors will be aware there is a lot to see around the corner. 'There will also be more island displays, which allow visitors to enjoy the stands from all angles,' he said. One of the stands will be the team from Lifton. 'We will enjoy it. It's an excellent show,' said Jo. A hamper of fresh produce prepared by the shop will be presented to the winner of the 'Gourmet Gardener' class in the floral art section. The Royal Cornwall Show takes place at Wadebridge on June 5, 6 and 7.
