THE firm which boasts of being 'Britain's premier house builder' has come under fire for a leaflet promoting a new development in Okehampton — packed with misleading information about the town. Residents who have seen the leaflet say although they do not want to denigrate the town, the Barratt leaflet claims that the annual agricultural show is 'renowned worldwide' and the town is full of 'gourmet dining' are exaggerations. The leaflet also praises the Guildhall Shopping Centre with its 'range of chain stores and boutiques' — without making it clear that prospective shoppers need to travel to Exeter to enjoy its charms. The leaflet was made available to people interested in living in Broome Park, Okehampton, a new development of two, three and four bedroom homes on the edge of the town. An exhibition to promote the development held at the White Hart Hotel in Okehampton earlier this month was well attended. The leaflet is so full of misinformation Barratt are intending to alter its contents. The Barratt leaflet describes Okehampton as a 'wonderfully quaint and historic market town' but on the reverse of the leaflet are a list of local amenities the firm has compiled, overlooking many Okehampton facilities. Among the glaring blunders are: l under the Post Office section, contact details are given for Throwleigh and North Tawton Post Office but not Okehampton l telephone numbers are provided for Plymouth City Council but not for Okehampton Town Council or Okehampton Hamlets Parish Council l the only entry under the section headed Doctors is Hatherleigh Medical Centre, with no mention of Okehampton Medical Centre l anyone looking at the leaflet who fancies a swim, might be forgiven for thinking the nearest swimming pool is in Torrington with Barratt making no mention of the Parklands Leisure Centre which cost millions of pounds to build and was only opened to much fanfare two years ago l the two entries for shopping are miles from Okehampton, the Guildhall Shopping Centre in Exeter and Trago Mills at Newton Abbot l in terms of education, strangely Chumleigh Community College and South Dartmoor Community College in Ashburton are promoted along with Okehampton College. A spokesperson for Barratt said: 'The Broome Park development is currently only selling off-plan and this is only preliminary material released for our off-plan launch. 'We will be refining the brochure over the next few weeks and will certainly pay attention to local feedback.' Allenton Fisher, who runs the Post Office in Okehampton, which is omitted from the leaflet in favour of Throwleigh and North Tawton Post Offices branded the leaflet 'disgusting'. Mr Fisher said: 'Business people in the town are trying to upgrade their shops and encourage people moving to the town to support their local businesses, so for Barratt to publish something telling people to go elsewhere, does not help at all. 'I wonder where they have compiled their information from? I think it is pathetic.' Cllr Tony Leech, described the content of the leaflet as 'very poor'. He said: 'I was rather disappointed. You would have thought they would want to make sure any information they put in the leaflet was correct.' Chairman of Okehampton Chamber of Trade Richard Appleby said the chamber would have been only too happy to have provided Barratt with reliable information about the town, if they had been approached.
