I VISITED the new recycling centre in Okehampton to check out the recycled goods for sale. It all looked very impressive, with a new office and road although at the grand opening there was no mention of how many local people would be employed at the site.

I enquired from a woman working on site, where are the recycled goods for sale? I was given a curt reply 'There', pointing at a large garage-type building.

I entered and was perplexed, as I could not see the usual array of goods for sale. I asked again of a man inside, who pointed at a small heap of indescribable rubbish on the floor.

In the past I have witnessed an interesting amount of goods delivered to the site when the helpful woman who was running it, before it was upgraded, was in charge.

I was very disappointed. There are many recycling centres in Devon where one can find the odd kitchen chairs, bookshelves, gardening tools, picture frames, sinks, taps, china, interesting bric-a-brac etc, displayed for all to see.

The question is what happens to the goods brought to the site, if they are not here for sale, where do they go and why?
