GARDENERS wondering how to deal with an abundance of autumn leaves are being offered discounted compost bins.

West Devon Borough Council has a stock of large 300 litre home composters which are available to residents for just £12 each – they would normally cost £16.

The award-winning green Rotol bins are made in Devon from 100% recycled plastic.

They have a cone-shaped design which ensures excellent heat penetration from the sun – essential for good composting.

Cllr Robert Oxborough, the council's community services chairman, said: 'Autumn leaves are often problematic to compost.

'You need to make sure you mix them with other green waste such grass cuttings and fresh plant material.

'These bins are a good solution as they are larger than the average composter allowing more room to create a balanced compost.

'We only have a limited supply of the 300 litre bins, and at this price they are fantastic value so — to coin a phrase — when they're gone, they're gone!'

The bins are available for collection from the council's offices at Kilworthy Park in Tavistock and St James Street in Okehampton.
