DURING Volunteer Month in June, the Volunteer Centre West Devon ran a competition and asked people what volunteering meant to them.

The winner was Janet Coopey of Okehampton who wrote: 'For me volunteering means being of service to others; helping groups or individuals; improving the lives of others; giving something back to the community and‚ having fun.'

Other notable entries included:

l 'Meeting people, helping people and being involved with community projects and feeling good'

l 'Volunteering means to give without expecting something in return, to offer service without praise, and to know that your actions may have helped someone realise that others care, giving hope'

l 'Volunteering makes our Community a better place to live'
