STEEL gates which are being installed around the Meadows in Tavistock have been labelled as 'fit for royalty' by members of Tavistock Town Council.

Remedial and enhancement works have been undertaken to entrance gates leading to the Meadows by the council's works department. The work has seen the replacement of wooden gates with steel ones made by Tavistock firm Steel Tech, designed by Dave Ellis in conjunction with Wayne Southall, works superintendent for the council.

So far the gates, painted green and with the Tavistock crest placed on the front, have been installed at Meadow's Walk, Canal Walk and Pearse's Meadow. Gates to Rose Walk and other entrances should be in place by the end of February 2009.

At the council's properties committee meeting last Tuesday, councillors commented on how elegant the gates looked.

Mandy Govier, deputy mayor, said: 'I just want to say a huge thank you as I think the gates to Meadow's Walk and Abbey Walk are absolutely fabulous — they look fit for royalty.

'I really think it's fantastic — they look so elegant and you can see they have been done to a high standard.'

The project, funded by Tavistock Town Council, was initiated by the council's works department in July this year, and all gates around the Meadows should be completely installed by February 2009.
