YOUR correspondent Andrew Wilson (February 22) ridicules the idea of reopening the old LSWR railway line. The problems associated with the demolition of properties is acknowledged, though I did point out the absurdity of allowing houses to be built on such an artery in the first place.

However, given that a train can carry more than four or five hundred people at a time, a bus only four or five dozen and a car only four or five individuals, I would like to know what would be Mr Wilson's alternative answer to the transport problem.

We have sunk into an attitude in this country where we no longer get on and do anything constructive, which accounts for the state we are in.

Sadly, I think that at the end of the day Mr Wilson will probably be proved right when he says that the line will not be reopened. Our roads will continue to become more and more congested, because in spite of all the talk I don't think Devon County Council has the bottle to do it!
