FROM the afternoon opening of Carnival Day in South Zeal with the children gathering for their fancy dress competition until the late evening closure of the annual event, the scene was set for success. Forecasts of poor weather proved unfounded and at the afternoon event the bright faces of dozens of youngsters in some exceptional costumes that did credit to those that made them set the standard for a carnival that was to prove to be the best seen in the village for many years. Pirates and kings competed for attention with a dinosaur, Santa and a Scotch Egg among the galaxy of characters that paraded proudly down the village lane, accompanied by Prince and Princess Emily and Charlie Glanville they made their way to face the judges. A similar enthusiasm warmed the village on an already warm evening as the older age groups gathered, with some tiny tots too, to climb onto colour filled floats that had been painstakingly created. Floats that could fly observers to the moon, carry them off to the Caribbean, take them back to Narnia or offer them the chance to Rock Around the Clock or visit Noddy in Toyland. The high standard of entries was also reflected in the individual and walking entries and the welcome presence of the Okehampton Carnival Queen, Prince and Princess. Hatherleigh Silver Band led the evening procession to Sticklepath and back with Carnival Queen Jessica Jeffreys and her attendants, Becky Hussey and Esther Fleming. The carnival committee thanked everyone for their hard work and also to everyone who helped behind the scenes at end of a truly marvellous carnival.
