MUD and water frolics abounded at the annual Watersports Day at Bere Ferrers quay on Saturday. Five teams competed in a variety of games, including welly throwing, a lilo race, a canoe tug-of-war, volleyball and wrestling on the greasy pole, designed to get them as muddy and wet as possible ? some games turned into a race against time due to the rapidly incoming tide. Many former local young people returned on an annual pilgrimage to take part and a team consisting mainly of these ? We Like Sudoku ? were the eventual winners. A bouncy castle kept children amused, together with the ever-popular crab catching, and stalls provided goods to buy or games to play, while a selection of refreshments and a barbecue were available. In the evening the festivities continued with two bands, the local Bere Band and Rusty Nail, pig roast and fireworks, with the biggest attendance for many years. Organisers thanked the sponsors, without whom the event could not be held. From money raised at last year?s event, £200 has been donated to the Bere Ferrers Villagers? Group, £100 to the Friends of Bere Alston Surgery and £100 to Bere Ferrers Church Hall for chairs for the new extension.
