AN array of family, sporting, baking and tasting events is being organised at Cotehele on Saturday and Sunday, June 29 and 30 on the quay and at the mill.
'Wet Wet Weekend' on the quay will feature a multitude of water-themed activities and 'Sconanza' at the mill will be a festival of scones.
Cotehele head ranger Joe Lawrence said: 'Cotehele exists because of the River Tamar, the only highway to this part of Cornwall for centuries — quite simply, no river no Cotehele. We're looking forward to celebrating all the water around us during these events and marking traditions of the river both on the quay and up the Morden stream tributary at our mill.'
For the adventurous, 'Wet Wet Weekend' will include a best dressed pirate competition, model boat demonstrations, canoe taster sessions with Canoe Tamar, gig-rowing with Cotehele Gig Club and the opportunity to board Cotehele's 1899 Tamar sailing barge, 'Shamrock'.
The RNLI, Saltash Marine Cadets, British Canoe Union, SailTrade cic, and 'Serious Outdoor Skills' will all be there; plus there will be a face painter and a bouncy castle. Tamar Grow Local will hold a farmers' market on Saturday and there will be a chance on Sunday to try your hand at a variety of lawn games.
On Saturday, a first-ever 'splash and dash' swimming and running race is planned. Adults are invited for a 400m (approx) swim in the river Tamar and a 4k (approx) run through the woods.
At 'Sconanza' up the stream at Cotehele Mill, volunteer bakers will be baking a variety of scones all weekend long using flour ground at the mill.
Visitors will be able to sample the scones right out of the oven in the demonstration bakery, try home-made jam, have a go at making butter and play family games.
Wet Wet events on Cotehele Quay are free, except for the Splash and Dash race (£5.50. Booking and race info on 0844 249 1895).
