Cornwall Senior Cup Third Round Illogan RBL 1 Callington Town 1 CALLINGTON live to fight another day in the Senior Cup thanks to an injury time equaliser from Gavin West against their spirited Combination opponents on Saturday. Just how they needed his late strike only they will know as they laid siege to the home team?s goal for much of this game, but some wayward finishing and a first class performance from the home side?s keeper Danny Burrows kept them at bay until the dying seconds. Both sides opened with attacking play and could have scored long before the home side took a 22nd minute lead. Ryan Treloar was the instigator with a cross that was met by Gareth Pitt who stabbed the ball past Piper in the Town goal. Callington responded with some excellent approach work but they could not find the final touch, in spite of some outstanding play from David Woodfield on the right and Charlie Blair up front. The second period saw the Carlsberg side step up the pressure, but only after Illogan had spurned two chances to increase the lead. On 75 minutes, the pressure of the visitors appeared to have gained reward when Woodfield was upended in the area and the referee awarded a penalty. Up stepped the normally reliable West but his kick flew wide of Burrow?s right hand upright and many of the local supporters began to believe that this could be their day. With the game moving into injury time, another Callington attack saw the ball crossed from the right and it fell to West whose shot beat the keeper and nestled into the net off the knee of defender Sam Ridge. Just before the final whistle, West had another goalbound shot cleared off the line and at the other end John Govan blasted wide before the referee brought this entertaining game to an end. The teams meet again at Ginsters Marshfield Parc on Saturday with a 2pm kick off to see who progresses to the quarter finals. Cornish Guardian East Cornwall Premier League Callington Town 3 St Stephen 1 THREE years ago, this game would have been a regulation Duchy League fixture. But such has been the improvement in these two sides, they were meeting as East Cornwall league opponents and it was Callington who secured a valuable win. The game sparked into life inside three minutes when the visitors were awarded a penalty when Matt Lean had been fouled in the area, and Neil Whetter converted the resultant penalty. But that was about as good as it got for the Saints as Callington piled on the pressure with Adam Reid dominant and it was his through ball that set up Pete Styring for his first senior goal for the club with a great volley. The second half saw the home side press for more success and it came on the hour when Pete Floyd converted a penalty for Callington to give them the lead. Late on, Chris Truscott added a third to give the home side the points. Bodmin Trophies Duchy League Division Two Callington Town 6 Menheniot 0 NATHAN May celebrated his return to the fold at Callington with a cracking four goals to continue the renaissance of Callington Town in the Duchy League Division Two at Stoke Climsland on Saturday. The manager and supporters must have thought Christmas had come early when their new signing put them three goals up in the first 20 minutes. The second half saw no let up for the visitors and it was not long before Callington extended their lead when ? following a good move from Mark Young and a trusting run by Sean Hartley ? the winger crossed to the far post for May to score his 4th of the afternoon. Callington dominated the possession with their young side gaining confidence as they played the ball around the park and it was no surprise when, from a corner, Mike Vanstone headed their 5th with 20 minutes remaining. In the final few minutes, good skills by Steve Wyatt set up Sean Hatley to score from close range making it 6-0. DJM Under 18 Cambridge League Callington Colts 5 Hooe St John 1 CALLINGTON made it an impressive sixth successive league victory when they recovered from an early setback to crush their rather feisty opponents. The visitors took a third minute lead but shortly afterwards Pete Styring equalised before the impressive Nathan Dore gave the home side the lead before the break. The second period saw continued Callington pressure and they added goals from Gerrard Kelly, Mark Blatchford and a second from Dore to complete the rout. Callington Colts round up IT was cup weekend for Callington Colts teams with two teams progressing while two went out. The winners were the U11s who came from behind to beat Horrabridge in the Drake Cup with Owen Brown, Jodie Shipton and an own goal giving them victory. The other victors were the U12s who crushed Efford Youth 13 -0 in the Warspite Cup with Jack Bond hitting six, Alex Mortimore five, and Lee Webb with two. Not so good news for the U13s who went down 1-0 at Woolwell Juniors in the Astor Cup while the U16s went out by the odd goal in eleven as they lost 6-5 at Lipson United. The goals for Callington were shared around by Jason Rigement, Shane Maton, Ben Price, Harry Spencer and Martin Scott. The U14s continued to battle in the U14s Plymouth league but had no answer to the power of St Cleer Youth who ran out 7-1 winners with Jamie Blatchford grabbing their solitary goal.
